How Turbine Flow Meters Work

A turbine flow meter places a multi-blade rotor in the flow path. As liquid flows through, the rotor spins at a velocity proportional to flow rate. Rotational speed is detected by a magnetic or optical pickup and converted to a flow reading. Turbine meters typically deliver ±0.5% accuracy or better, making them well-suited to custody transfer, batch control and process monitoring.

The BES Turbo IR is BES Flowmeters' own-brand turbine water meter, designed specifically for Australian water measurement applications:

A turbine flow meter measures flow by passing fluid through a rotor with angled blades. Turbine flow meters are best suited to clean, low-viscosity liquids such as water, light oils and chemical solutions. They are not recommended for fluids containing suspended solids or high-viscosity liquids that may damage the rotor. Yes — turbine flow meters require a minimum length of straight pipe upstream (typically 10x pipe diameter) and downstream (5x pipe diameter) of the meter to ensure accurate measurement.
